Ah there’s so many… one of our favorites was landing Claire a job on Facebook! She contacted us because she was very frustrated that she didn’t get any interviews even though she had applied for all types of jobs in her industry, she also said she had a hard time wording her skills and qualities in the resume and had already spent hours editing it but didn’t feel happy. Her background was impressive but not responsive because it lacked many of the optimized key words, the descriptions didn’t really capture what she did in her past jobs, it was not formatted well and the layout was not competitive at all! We knew that she was not going to pass their online application scan with what she had, and everyone knows Facebook is very picky and have high standards of the people they employ. After we made her resume, she immediately got a phone screen, leading to a series of online tests for the Facebook Company – we prepped her for the interview through a Skype session and she called me after 2 weeks and said she was offered the job of her dreams! It’s not so much the success that makes me happy but rather the fact that we help customers to not miss out on opportunities simply because of poor content and bad layout. Claire clearly deserved the job she got but if she hadn’t got her resume re-written she probably would be stuck applying for jobs without any results!
First, hire people that have the education and the experience to write your resume.
Second, the individual who is writing your resume must have a recruitment background.
Third, check if they provide the BEFORE and AFTER result of an Applicant Tracking System scan of your resume.
Lastly, check their profile’s sample output. Current roles should be written from an implied-first person verb (Manage instead of managing or manages). Past experiences should be in past-tense (Collaborated instead of collaborates or collaborating). Rate also their templates; if they have a few templates, you need to be wary, because there’s a great chance that the hiring manager already saw that template. You need to make sure that the template they are using is ATS-compliant as well.
